By Natalia Avilez –
They say that behind every man there is a good woman. But in this case it is a little bit of both. Amnesia Sparkles, a character portrayed by New York Artist Adrian Acosta, is a Latina with her own set of accomplishments.
When asked why Amnesia was created, Amnesia chimed in; “the good Lord only knows why I was created. I think he did a fine job, especially with my legs.”
Although she is character portrayed by Adrian, she is Latina hear her roar.
A diva at heart, this actress, singer, multi-media reporter and contributing writer for “Next,” New York’s biggest guide to LGBT nightlife, touches on matters of the heart.
Having battled depression, anorexia, and self-diagnosed chronic fatigue syndrome, Adrian says Amnesia shows how you can overcome obstacles.
Although she recently became the host of the blog GenderFun.com, she is no stranger to the big screen. Amnesia has graced America’s TV screens via the WB, FOX, LOGO and HERE TV and American Idol.
By acting as the host of a fun interactive website GenderFun.com, Amnesia not only plans to share her personality and fashion sense with her 6,000 plus viewers but also hopes to let Latina women know they need to overcome “el machismo” in our society.”
“Femininity is fun but it doesn’t have to be a prison for Latino women; they can still be fun, sexy, and smart!” Amnesia said.
From topics ranging from fashion, fitness, beauty, race, gender, sexual orientation to community, Amnesia bares all.
According to GenderFun.com, “the goal of the site is to bridge the gap between gays and straights, boys and girls, butch and fems, young and old, fat and skinny, the smart and Amnesia.”
During their recent video shoot both Amnesia and Adrian took the time to speak with us earlier this month. This is what they had to say.
Who is Amnesia?
AC: Amnesia is a character I play…She has quite the history. She’s been around since 1997. The back story is that Amnesia was adopted by my Hispanic family. My mother even calls her “mi hija.” She doesn’t remember any details of her life prior to 1997 but she hopes that one day her memory will return letting her know who her real family and past.
AS: Amnesia is a state of mind…a metaphorical cheerleader. She represents trying your best even when the elements are against you.
Where are you from? What is your ethnic background?
AS: Adrian’s Hispanic family took me in. Adrian, like his mother, was born in Uruguay, and his father was born in Spain.
I know this is a big faux pas (asking a woman her age) but how old are you?
AS: Oh, I don’t mind. I keep it real. Since I lost my memory prior to 1997 I’m guessing I’m either in my late twenties or in my early fifties.
Who were some of you role models growing up?
AS: I’ve always loved strong women like Barbara Walters and loopy ladies like Liza Minnelli, not to mention the Hispanic version of Oprah, Christina Saralegui, and that diva Walter Mercado.
I noticed you interviewed celebrities such as RuPaul, Dolly Parton and Perez Hilton. Who is the next celebrity that you would love to interview and why?
AS: Rosie O’Donnell for sure. After reading her book “Celebrity Detox” I felt she needed a hug. We are both Aries so I’m sure it will be a fantastically dynamic encounter! Especially since I’m a beauty pageant winner and she’s not fond of beauty pageants. I would love to put Rosie in a tiara and night gown.
Finally, any advice for overcoming adversary what advice can you give young Latina women?
AS: I think Latinas like myself need to start by knowing their worth. We have stories worth telling. It might be a man’s world but we need to remind men that if it wasn’t in part for a woman they wouldn’t be on this earth.
As far as future projects are concerned Amnesia plans to continue providing content as well as videos for GenderFun.com, is working on a fitness video and plans to publish several books including “Life with Amnesia” and one about overcoming fears. Amnesia has a great video presence and could easily be a spokeswoman or reporter on any network.
Her personality really shows through in all that she does, and even when she is really camping it up, the viewer gets the sense that she is a genuine sort of person who would give you the blouse off of her back if you were in need.
I really enjoy seeing her on videos and would love it if more transwomen and queens could be self confident, outgoing people, like Amnesia.
